Chennai Metro Rail Service Launched-June 2015
First phase of Chennai Metro Rail service was launched successfully on 29 June’2015
Service got launched by the hands of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Currently Metro service in Chennai covers the 10-km elevated stretch across Alandur in south Chennai to Koyabedu in the north of the city.
This project is implemented by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and got approved by Congress-led UPA government in mid 2009.
Chennai is now seventh city in India to have metro service following Delhi, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Kolkata and Jaipur.
• The 10-km overhead stretch will be covered in 18 minutes.
• Four coaches having capacity of 1276 passengers.
• Seven stations in the stretch- Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Ashok Nagar, Ekkattuthangal.
